How much does it cost to build a cannabis grow room?
HOW MUCH WEED CAN I GROW AT HOME?
Now that you know how much it costs to build an indoor grow room, you'll also want to know how much bud you'll be able to produce in a single grow.
Most beginner growers will be able to produce 0.5 grams per 1 watt of light in their grow room. Hence, if you're working with a 400W lamp, you can expect to produce roughly 200 grams of weed (as long as you don't make any detrimental mistakes).
Remember that this is a ballpark figure. The amount of weed you're able to produce is influenced by a whole variety of factors (apart from your skills as a grower), including the genetics of the plants you're growing and the quality of your equipment.
The Space to Grow
Indoor cannabis growProfessionally cultivating cannabis is much different than having a few plants in your closet or a grow room set up in your basement. If you want to grow marijuana for the masses, you'll have to think on a larger scale. Like warehouse size scale.
Renting a space to grow weed isn't like renting a space to make t-shirts. Even in states where cannabis is legal, landlords aren't always willing to rent to growers. And if they are, it's likely the price you'll pay is going to be more expensive.
If you're growing indoors, you'll need lights to do it. The cost you spend on lighting is dependent on how many plants you're planning on growing. There are literally hundreds of options for grow lights, ranging from budget-friendly to uber expensive. Keep in mind that each light has a maximum amount of space it can cover, so if you're growing on a commercial scale plan to spend more.
Led grow lights $150-$500
LED grow lights can average from a 2400W that covers 6×6.5ft for $250-$350 to a 400W that covers 2x2ft for around $200. Rather than crowd a bunch of plants under one light, you'll want to keep it to a minimum for maximum production. Some growers will do one plant for every 250W. If you're growing indoors, plan on spending several thousand dollars to get the lights you need.
HID lighting $200-$8000
This kind of light is the most powerful and generally more expensive option. There are two different categories of HID Lamps. Metal halide (MS) and high-pressure sodium (HPS). Both will emit a stronger more concentrated light than their fluorescent counterparts, and both contain at least one gas-filled tube.
MH Lights- Metal halide bulbs will emit light more focused on the blue portion of the spectrum. Its light appears as white and does not distort the color of a plant.
HPS Grow Lights- High-pressure sodium bulbs emit a strong orange or red spectrum light and will distort the colors of the plants they illuminate.
Fluorescent grow lights $20-$500
Fluorescent grow lightsalso have two variations. High intensity and regular fluorescent bulbs. Fluorescent are the less expensive option and give the user the option to choose a light color that suits their preference. High intensity is slightly more expensive, but both offer similar benefits to both the plants they illuminate and the user. Traditional fluorescent bulbs emit a light that isn't quite so strong and tend to cover a smaller area, so if you do choose this option than you may need more than one.
Temperature Control and Ventilation
Grow lights get hot and growing indoors requires the temperature to be regulated. Fans are a huge component of an indoor grow and can cost up to $50-$100 or more per inline fan. The larger your grow operation, the more fans you will need. For a large-scale grow operation, you could be looking at startup costs for fans at $200 or more.
There is also the cost for humidifiers and ventilation systems. In order to keep plants healthy and happy, you'll need all the equipment that makes up an ideal environment. On average, the cost of fans and other equipment you'll need can run $100-$300.
Plant Nutrients & Fertilizer
The next thing you will need to consider is that you will need to get some fertilizer and nutrients to facilitate the healthy growth of your weed plants. Now, fertilizer and liquid plant nutrients do not come in sizes for single plants. Often, if you buy liquid nutrients, you will be able to use a single bottle for about 12 plants, if not more.
What you do need to keep in mind here is that marijuana plants go through 2 growth stages, these being the vegetative stage and the flowering state. You will need to buy different liquid nutrients for each stage, but luckily you can usually find all in one bottles for each stage.
So, for both the vegetative stage and flowering state nutrients, you can expect to spend between $20 and $30 per bottle, so between $40 and $60 for both sets of nutrients, depending on the brand and quality.
Cost: $40 - $60 (For 5 Plants Or More)
Growing Medium
Soil and seedlings being wateredYou've got your space rented and all the equipment you need to get your grow going. You'll also need to purchase whatever grow medium you plan on using. Whether growing in soil or setting up a hydroponic system, plan on spending the money to do so. Average prices will fluctuate depending on how you plan on growing.
There are low-cost hydroponic systems, but they aren't exactly the best for growing cannabis commercially. The best hydroponic systems can average more than $400 but will produce more and are typically much easier to use.
If you're choosing soil as your growing medium, a 10-gallon smart pot requires 1.34 cubic feet of soil. A 1.5 cu ft. bag of Roots Organic Soil averages $15. So, if you were growing 10 plants in 10-gallon pots, you would spend approximately $1,50 just on soil. A 10-gallon smart pot averages just about $5, so you would need another $50 for your pots.
Other
There are a couple of other smaller things you will need, especially when it comes time to harvest, dry, and cure your marijuana, but these are inexpensive things.
- Netting - You may require some netting to keep top heavy plants upright. $10
- Scissors - You will need scissors for trimming. $10
- Gloves - When handling the finished product, you will want latex gloves. $5
- Jars - To cure your marijuana, you will need glass mason jars. $3 - $20
- Timer - In case you will not always be there to keep an eye on things, you will need a timer for your lights. $10-$15
