How to Train Indoor Cannabis for Bigger Yields
Pruning for a greater yield
Pruning is a process of selectively trimming plants so that they produce the most flowers or fruit. For marijuana plants, this means ensuring even the smallest amount of plants obtains the maximum yield. Pruning techniques are often used by professional growers seeking to maximize results in a limited indoor growing space. Not only are pruned plants able to produce more flowers, but they also are able to produce bigger and heavier buds. This is because, by pruning, no energy is wasted on growing as many leaves and buds, leaving the remaining ones free to thrive.
Grow flatter and wider instead
Another way to increase yield is to "train" your plants. This will give you bigger, wider plants with more colas spaced out. This is a technique that doesn't cost any money and it can really make a difference to the size of your harvest. Training is a form of pruning but you don't actually need to cut your plant. It is called LST, or low stress training. With low stress training you are manipulating your plants to grow flatter and wider instead of skinny and tall by using bending techniques. If you are going for this technique then you should begin when the plant is quite young as it is difficult to manipulate the plant in the "table top" shape once it has developed into a triangle or tree-like shape. Low stress training is useful because it trains the plant to grow so that it boosts its absorption of light. As the plant is growing outwards it allows more leaves to intake light energy.
If you want great, big, fat buds you need to give them the right nutrients. You can't expect to stick the seedling in any 'ol soil and just expect the soil to give your plant what it needs. Throughout the plant's life until harvest you need to feed it what it craves. If you want to ensure your babies get what they need to grow big and strong then purchase Flower Power Fertilizer. These fertilizers will provide your plant with the right ratio of nutrients for every stage of your plant's life. Just like with everything; too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. If you stuff too many nutrients into your plant then it will end up getting nutrient burn. To avoid this, follow the feeding schedule on the fertilizer packaging.
Bigger and better buds
Grooming your plants a bit will help them to flourish. After your plant has entered the flowering stage you should remove dying leaves to speed up your marijuana plant's bud growth. If you have yellowing leaves get rid of them. They are using up the plant's energy and assets just by being there. If you cut them off then all those resources can go to growing bigger and better buds.
All plants need Carbon Dioxide, CO2, to grow and be healthy. So, if you raise the CO2 that your plant is getting then you are making them grow more. Plants can only use CO2 during the time it gets light, and the more light that the plant gets the more CO2 it will need for photosynthesis. It is basically increasing your plant's ability to use light. During photosynthesis the carbon-fixing reaction occurs. This means the splitting CO2 molecules into carbon filter and hydrogen to make food for the plant in the form of sugars and starches. Adding CO2 will help keep your plant from getting too much light as the increased CO2 will add to its light capacity.
If you follow these helpful tips you will be on your way to bigger and better yields. Just keep in mind to do everything in moderation. Keep a close eye on your plants as they will indicate to you what they need or if you are giving them too much of a good thing.
General Low Stress Training (LST) - LST is the process of bending stems and securing them in place. The general idea is to bend tall stems down and away from the middle of the plant as it grows so the plant takes on a more flat and wide shape. This should be started when the plant is still a seedling since its young stems will be flexible, while the stems of older plants become rigid and woody. Some growers use the term "LST" as an umbrella term to cover all types of plant training, while others use it to refer only to bending.
A decent ventilation system will give your plants the fresh air they need; plants breathe CO2 during the day, so if you don't set up an air ventilation and renewal system your plants will run out of breathable air rather soon. You can also give your plants some extra CO2 such as Exhale CO2 bags or CO2 bottle kits inside your grow tent - this will decrease the amount of ventilation you need as well as improving your plants' photosynthesis process and nutrient and water absorption. The result should be an abundant yield using the same equipment you've always used and the same light - using CO2 can also speed up flowering, allowing you to harvest a couple of days earlier than usual, sometimes even a week.
If you want to get complicated then you can grow using a maximum yield system; you'll need to spend a little more time tending to your crops but you'll be highly rewarded for doing so. There are various systems you can use such as grow wheels or vertical grows, but the easiest one to do without spending a lot on equipment is the SCRoG method. This basically involves bending the branches of one plant to fit them through a mesh placed above the plant, ensuring all of the branches are at the same height, making for a figurative screen of green, full of hard and dense buds. All of the tips of the branches should get the same amount of light. You can see how to use this system and others by clicking here.
There are many ways to get the most out of your plants, but most of them are variations of the previously mentioned advice such as pruning to get wider plants, doubling the branches so that they grow more etc. There are many things that can be done; if you can think of any more or have any questions don't hesitate to leave a comment and our team of experts will get back to you as soon as possible.
